The Antikythera Mechanism

The Antikythera Mechanism is a clockwork device that was used in the early Greek civilization. It was discovered from a shipwreck. Understanding the device itself took more than a hundred years. The Antikythera Mechanism is currently housed in Greek national archeological museum.  This is to present the most complex antiquity existent.  It is something worth seeing for yourself when you come on vacation in Greece. This great discovery is stationed at the capital of Greece and there  are many other great discoveries that you will also take a look and to familiarize yourself with how far Greek civilization has leaped the modern civilization.

The Antikythera Mechanism initially was understood to be functioning as a computer for use to path phases of solar system. In addition, it is believed to have been used in working out astrological occurrences or calendars. According to new findings the device might have also been used in other areas and this only serves to further evidence its uniqueness.

This precious relic is just a fraction of principal fragment evidences indicating that even in the ancient times there was a belief that planets revolved round the sun. This further refutes Aristotle and other early philosophers‘ concepts. This is further strengthened by the locality of its discovery. It is the Greek divers who were investigating Roman shipwreck at depths of 136 feet in the years 1901 who happened to come across 820strange bronze colored pieces .

According to estimates it is projected that The Antikythera Mechanism was actually made around 87 BC. Moreover, it is considered to have been the first geared machinery using a different gear and was employed within the ancient analogue computers.  After it was recovered it was washed and The Antikythera Mechanism was first seen for what it really was.  It was and still is a very complicated structure of gears which are gathered in a bronze contraption that resembles a clocklike structure.

Its differential gears mainly consisted over 30 bronze gears that had teeth fashioned in a special equilateral triangle. It is thought that this was to help deducting or adding angular momenta.  There are a lot of engaging gears as well as a hand lever providing rotation to the whole geared machine.  In addition to the display it basically displayed data on lunar month, major planets and sun all in contrast to background of stars.

Intricacy of discovered gears within The Antikythera Mechanism literally bewildered researchers who were working on it. This is with the scholarly knowledge of the fact that this kind of lost technology was never heard of until 1575 BC.  When the Antikythera mechanism was examined a fresh it was established that apart from the forecasting of solar evolutions, this device is also capable of being used in charting Olympic Games. This revelation astounded many who did not foresee that kind of possibility.

Actually, the sequence of Olympic Games wasn’t extremely complicated because it was basically a 4 year cycle thing. The Antikythera Mechanism device is believed to have been in use for a long time during the ancient times. It has dials that are marked with solar calendar and zodiac calendar.  There are also pointers for the moon and the sun as well as showing the phase of the moon.  In the rear the device displays information regarding Saros cycle which was used in predicting the eclipse.  In addition there was callippic cycle which basically designed the spiral dials.

In general terms, the device uses differential gears which are believed to have been invented in middle ages. This is also attributed to the level of the complexity of the parts and miniaturization comparable to 18th century clocks.  There are those who have noted that it is not entirely unique at least according to some functions that it has done like predicting motions of moon, sun and some planets.

However, it is the level of astronomical understanding and precision that is necessary in  the functionality of The Antikythera Mechanism and attests to  a possibility of it being a case example of ancient genius in science and mechanics. It also demonstrates that other fabricators and designers could have produced other examples of similar structures or instruments.

The Antikythera Mechanism is still considered the oldest geared devices in the worlds ever known.  It has puzzled and intrigued many historians both of science and technology ever since it was discovered.  It is now believed that it is an ancient Greek tradition of mechanical technology which was transmitted through the Arab world. It was formed on the basis of European clock making techniques. You can catch a glimpse of the oldest geared device in the world at the Greek city in the museum of archeological discoveries.
